1957 Messerschmitt KR200 Convertible at Klairmont Kollections in Chicago.

Messerschmitt became famous for their fighter planes during World War 2, but like many other companies, they switched to automotive manufacturing to help Germany rebuild after the war ended.  But the fact that many Germans couldn’t afford cars that were once popular gave rise to a tiny class of German post war vehicle commonly referred to as the “bubble car”.  The most common bubble cars were the Goggomobils, the BMW Isettas, and the Messerschmitts.  Messerschmitt’s cars were unique in that they had tandem seating along with other design features that paid homage to their years as an airplane manufacturer.

Recently Elio Motors is attempting to make a modern three wheeled car with tandem seating that looks very much like a modern version of the Messerschmitt.  Unfortunately funding problems have delayed the Elio car many times and it’s uncertain if it will ever be available.
